Sustainable Tourism
Sustainable tourism meets the needs of the present travelers and host communities whilst conserving the environment and supporting local cultures for the benefit of future generations. (Bernard Metzger at the Kenya Travel Trade Fair, Nairobi, 1994)
In consultation with a broad cross section of stakeholders, the Travel & Tourism Foundation undertakes research into the strategic challenges facing travel and tourism and produces reports, information, tools and products to improve business practices and inform policy development.
The delivery of this researched information and data to destinations, businesses, communities and governments will ultimately enhance the environmental, economic and social sustainability of travel and tourism.
The research and data collected by the Travel and Tourism Foundation can provide essential information to help destination stakeholders develop a strategy that identifies and develops its unique cultural and natural assets.
Relevant information, research and communication on the nature of tourism and its effects on the human and cultural environment has to be available prior to and during development, especially for the local people, so that they can participate in and influence the direction of development and its effects as much as possible, in the individual and collective interest.
The Foundation, through its media network, assists destinations and businesses in communicating effectively at all stages of the development and implementation of its sustainable tourism strategy. Further, our data network allows to effectively measure the results and positive impact on environment and communities.
The Travelindex Directory provides links that can help build alliances for better sustainable tourism and destination management through direct assistance or contacts with other organizations that can help.
